Start at the level that suits you, revisit lessons when needed, and move forward at your own pace.

One Topic, Three Levels

The levels describe increasing difficulty within Mandarin Ladder. Each level gives you a complete learning experience—you can begin at the level that suits you.

Level 1 — Build a Foundation

Follow essential information, understand everyday situations, and describe personal experiences using clear sentences.

Level 2 — Connect Ideas

Follow detailed explanations, understand causes and relationships, and support an opinion with a reason and an example.

Level 3 — Explore in Depth

Interpret viewpoints, recognize assumptions and limitations, and develop a connected response with explanations and examples.

Listening: Understand the Story

Listen to materials adapted from Chinese news reporting, with AI-generated voices.

Each level provides the context needed to understand the subject independently. You do not need to complete the earlier levels first.

Levels 1 and 2 use narration. Level 3 uses a reconstructed interview with multiple speakers, helping you follow questions, responses, and different perspectives.

Each listening lesson includes:

  • Audio and a Chinese transcript
  • Six core vocabulary items
  • Comprehension questions with answer explanations

Reading: Explore Beyond the News

Reading extends the topic through new situations and perspectives, giving you something different to discover.

  • Level 1: Personal experiences and everyday situations
  • Level 2: Community relationships and social connections
  • Level 3: Broader arguments, conditions, and implications

Some passages use fictional or illustrative situations for learning; they are not accounts of events from the source news report.

Each reading lesson includes:

  • A Chinese passage
  • Six core vocabulary items
  • Comprehension questions with answer explanations

Speaking: Turn Understanding into Expression

Use the topic to talk about your experiences, preferences, and ideas.

Each level includes:

  • Three open-ended discussion prompts
  • Key words and reusable sentence patterns
  • Connecting expressions to organize your response
  • Sample responses showing how the expressions work in context

Start with short, complete sentences. Build toward supported opinions and connected explanations as you progress.

The samples are references, not scripts to memorize. There is no single correct response.

Level 4 Challenge: Think in Chinese

After Level 3, try a Chinese-only comprehension question using the same audio or reading passage.

The question and answer choices are entirely in Chinese, encouraging you to connect ideas and apply your understanding without an English translation.
