How It Works

Design principle: Authentic Chinese, carefully scaffolded.

Mandarin Ladder helps learners build real-world Chinese skills through contemporary topics and a structured learning framework.

Every topic follows the same progression, developing listening, reading, and speaking skills while exploring issues shaping modern China.

A Simple Path from Textbook Chinese to Real-World Chinese

Step 1
Choose a Real-World Topic
Step 2
Select Your Level
Step 3
Listening, Reading & Speaking
Step 4
Practice & Check Understanding
Step 5
Handle Real-World Chinese

Three Levels

Each topic is available in three proficiency levels:

Level 1 — Upper Beginner

Clear, accessible language focused on essential ideas and high-frequency vocabulary.

Level 2 — Intermediate

More detailed content with expanded vocabulary, authentic structures, and broader perspectives.

Level 3 — Advanced

More sophisticated language, abstract ideas, and deeper analysis of contemporary issues.

Listening

Each topic includes three listening lessons built around the same subject. As you move from Level 1 to Level 3, the language becomes increasingly natural and complex, helping you build confidence with real-world spoken Chinese.

Each listening lesson includes:

  • Audio
  • Core Vocabulary
  • Comprehension Quiz

Reading

Reading lessons explore the same topic from different perspectives:

  • Level 1 — Personal and Everyday Perspectives
  • Level 2 — Community and Social Perspectives
  • Level 3 — Policy, Economic, and Analytical Perspectives

This approach helps learners see how the same issue can be discussed at different levels of complexity.

Each reading lesson includes:

  • Core Vocabulary
  • Reading Quiz

Speaking

Each level includes discussion prompts based on the topic.

Learners are encouraged to respond in complete sentences, support their opinions, and speak with increasing complexity as they progress through the levels.

Speaking activities help learners develop:

  • Fluency
  • Organization
  • Vocabulary Range
  • Critical Thinking

Each speaking lesson includes:

  • Discussion Prompts

Learn Through Topics

Rather than studying isolated dialogues or textbook scenarios, learners engage with topics shaping modern China, including:

  • Policy & Governance
  • Economy
  • Society
  • Culture
  • Technology
  • Environment
  • Diplomacy & Security
  • International Affairs
  • Education & Health
  • Geography & Travel

By progressing through multiple levels and skills within a single topic, learners gradually build the confidence needed to understand and discuss real-world Chinese.

Built for Contextual Thinkers

Some learners don't thrive on isolated vocabulary lists or disconnected textbook dialogues.

They learn best when language is connected to real ideas, current events, and meaningful themes.

Mandarin Ladder is designed for these contextual thinkers—learners who want to understand not only how Chinese works, but also what is happening in China today.

Learn Chinese through context, not disconnected vocabulary lists.

One Topic. Three Levels. Three Skills. Real Progress.
